Learning Through Service

Immersive WORKFORCE LEARNING at nOURish BRIDGEPORT

nOURish BRIDGEPORT creates meaningful learning experiences for college students, youth, community partners, and future workforce participants through its SUPER FOOD PANTRY, INDOOR HYDROPONIC FARM, FEEL THE WARMTH MOBILE HOT MEALS, and other community-based initiatives.

Internships at the SUPER FOOD PANTRY and INDOOR HYDROPONIC FARM

Interning at nOURish BRIDGEPORT as an undergraduate student provides a distinct bridge between academic theory and community action. Interns directly contribute to delivering essential aid to families across the greater Bridgeport area. Interns often complete a course requirement through their job at nOURish BRIDGEPORT.

Depending upon interest, each applicant is evaluated individually based on previous experience and/or expressed interest in agricultural work, previous work or volunteer experience in any field, and personal goals.

Due to the responsibilities involved with food crop production and handling, interns must be 18 years of age and hold a driver’s license.

At the SUPER FOOD PANTRY

Interns gain real-world exposure to local health, housing, income, and educational disparities while interacting with immigrant and low-income populations, reinforcing empathy, cultural competency, and practical communication. Interns also work alongside nOURish BRIDGEPORT staff to manage food supply chains and distribute thousands of pounds of fresh produce, pantry goods, and essentials through programs including the SUPER FOOD PANTRY, BABY CENTER, and FEEL THE WARMTH MOBILE HOT MEALS.

At the INDOOR HYDROPONIC FARM

Interns working at the nOURish BRIDGEPORT FARM gain practical experience in seeding, transplanting, nutrient balancing, PH testing, pest control, harvesting, and system maintenance for year-round crop yields. Interns explore how modern agricultural techniques improve urban food access and strengthen supply chains in underserved communities. Interns are actively recruited through local universities and community partners, and nOURish BRIDGEPORT is also open to applicants who approach the organization for a summer job.

Learning About Poverty and Food Insecurity Through Experience

Providing life-changing experiences for suburban youth, our “Youth Immersion Experience” program provides suburban youth education on the complex issues of poverty and food insecurity.

Through volunteering at our FEEL THE WARMTH MOBILE HOT MEALS, being challenged to purchase healthy food at neighborhood bodegas with an EBT/SNAP benefit card, and cooking an entire meal from the groceries available from our SUPER FOOD PANTRY, these youth are exposed to the barriers and challenges faced by many of the neighbors nOURish BRIDGEPORT serves.

Recently, 50 youth and 20 adults from New Canaan, Brookfield, Trumbull, Fairfield, and similar affluent communities have benefitted from new perspectives through this hands-on educational exercise.
